Samantha Sweet seems off in this story, as if she is floating in caramel and can't see a clear path. Her bakery is doing wonderful, the plans for her wedding is all set and then she gets involved with finding a man who disappeared ten years earlier and deal with Beau's ex in town. The magic doesn't seem to flow as in past stories but forced as an after thought. As if the magic box Samantha possesses has faded away. Time Samantha learns more about the magic of her box and learns to use it for more than just energy.
Another great read - mystery, romance, good characters, and so much fun to read about all the "sweets" from the bakery. Connie has done a super job on this latest book - can't wait for the next one.
It has all the elements to keep one reading half the night - just a bit of danger to keep one wondering, a bit of romance, some touching moments, and enough sugar and spice to make one want to run out to a bakery or get in the kitchen baking. Loved it!
Samantha is not a conventional woman. She legally breaks into house for a living while keeping her dream of owning a bakery alive. She's raised her daughter as a single, working mother. She possesses a magical box that helps her multitask (proving the efficient, superwoman complex is a hoax). In this book, Samantha has attained her bakery goal, but she finds that mysteries still must be solved, keeping her so busy that she may once again miss her own wedding. I've enjoyed this series and have found that Ms. Shelton continues to perfect her craft with every book. You'll cheer to the MC and the author.
Connie Shelton wrote 5 books of the Samantha Sweet series. I have read every one of them. It is about a woman who has always wanted to start her own bakery and finally gets the chance to do just that. She also is a caretaker for the USDA for abandoned homes. This is where her concerns for the people in these homes gets her playing detective. She meets the local sheriff and soon they become engaged. They plan their wedding date but through various obstacles the wedding still has not taken place as of the 5th book. I thorougly enjoy this series but have reached the 5th book. PLEASE PLEASE Ms. Shelton, write more of this series and quickly. Someday there has to be a wedding.
I think this was my favorite in the series so far. Without giving away too much, the beginning was a little sad, but necessary. I loved the story line, the way she wove the old mystery into a new one. I love, love, love her relationship and cannot wait for them to marry. And I love how the relationship with her daughter seems to improve each book. The daughter isn't a cartoonish adult child who has moved back home, but continues to grow and mature. The box is odd, but slightly fascinating, and the chocolate experiments are fun. I miss Samantha when I'm done with the books. I loaned it to my mother-in-law when I was done, and she loved it too.
The Samantha Sweet series is an enjoyable read and I can think of no higher praise. On a personal level, I enjoy the way Ms Shelton manages to bring a bit of magic and reality together to keep the reader interested enough to read every book, and wish for just a bit more. The use of magic from a certain item, although only partially discussed, does require more explanation regarding the background of said item and the reason Sam Sweet was chosen to be its keeper. Perhaps a journey into the past of the item in question would be a good idea, but I will wait to see how Ms Shelton works this into the storyline. However, even without the desired explanation, this reader likes the way each book in the series is as enjoyable as a visit with a good friend, so keep 'em coming Connie! P.S. Hitch Beau and Sam! I was a bit disappointed that the possibility was dropped in #4, because it IS going to take a bit more magic, now!
I've now read all four of the Samantha Sweet mysteries, and found the series quite entertaining. The main characters are very appealing, and fun to get to know. The romance angle is nice, without being overtly sex-driven (I'd even let my Grandma read them), and readers can hold out for the best outcome for everyone. I like the mother-daughter coming to terms aspect, as well. Even the local geography becomes a major character, with all the traveling arount that Sam does. there is even a little "woo-woo" and magic for those who enjoy that. Sweet Hearts is in ways my favorite (and most disappointing, relationship-wise), and certainly makes me hanker for more stories about these characters from Connie Shelton.
I enjoy tucking light, airy reads among the "heavier" books. This series would be good reads for travel/vacation time, especially if you have an electronic reader, so you don't have to tote all four books along. Warning I am a voracious reader, and can easily polish off one of these books in an afternoon, if I'm not interrupted.
